PCR in Cosmetic Packaging: How to Manage Variations in Colour, Finish and Perceived Quality

When a brand decides to incorporate PCR into its packaging, the change goes beyond the origin of the material. It can also affect highly visible aspects such as colour, transparency and the final appearance of the packaging.

Using PCR in cosmetic packaging can introduce variations in colour, transparency or finish that need to be considered from the earliest stages of a project. These differences do not necessarily indicate a quality issue; they are part of the inherent characteristics of working with a raw material whose origin and processing differ from those of virgin material.

For brands, the question is therefore not only how much PCR can be incorporated, but also what visual and functional performance needs to be maintained and what degree of variation can be accepted.

What is PCR in cosmetic packaging?

PCR stands for Post-Consumer Recycled material. It comes from waste that has already completed a consumer use cycle and is subsequently recovered and reintroduced into the manufacturing process as recycled raw material.

In cosmetic packaging, PCR content should not be confused with recyclability. Incorporating recycled material into a pack is one consideration; whether the complete packaging can be effectively recycled at the end of its life is another.

A pack containing PCR incorporates recycled raw material. Whether that same pack is recyclable at the end of its useful life depends on its overall design, components, materials, decoration and the recycling stream for which it is intended.

Why can packaging containing PCR look different?

Virgin plastic starts with a raw material that offers a high degree of consistency. With recycled material, additional factors come into play, including the source of the waste, sorting processes, recycling methods and the characteristics of the different recycling streams used. These factors can influence the base colour of the material and result in slight visual variations.

In the case of glass or plastics such as PET, this becomes particularly relevant when the project requires transparent packaging, very light shades or brand colours that need to be reproduced with a high degree of accuracy. It can also affect the final appearance of decoration applied to the packaging.

Achieving consistent colour on recycled resins is sufficiently challenging that specific technologies have been developed to predict and correct colour when working with PCR.

For this reason, using PCR in cosmetic packaging requires brands and suppliers to define in advance what level of variation will be considered acceptable.

Colour, transparency and finish: what should a brand consider?

Not all visual characteristics respond in the same way when recycled content is incorporated.

The objective, therefore, should not be to expect recycled material to look exactly like virgin material, but rather to determine what result the project actually requires.

The percentage of PCR also matters

The appropriate percentage of PCR depends on the type of material, the packaging component, required performance, availability of recycled raw material, compatibility with the product and the desired aesthetic result.

Specific certification systems are available to verify recycled content. RecyClass, for example, provides a traceability scheme that can verify the percentage of recycled plastic incorporated into a product and provide documentary evidence to support claims regarding recycled content.

For procurement and sustainability teams, this documentation is just as important as the physical sample itself.

When recycled material becomes part of the brand’s visual identity

In cosmetics, packaging does more than contain a formula. It also builds brand recognition. A slight colour variation may be insignificant for one project and critical for another.

A brand built around a highly consistent white colour palette, transparent packaging or precisely defined corporate colours will have different requirements from a brand that deliberately embraces some of the natural variation associated with recycled materials. Incorporating PCR into cosmetic packaging is therefore also a design decision.

Marketing, procurement and product development teams should agree from the outset which elements are non-negotiable and where there is room for flexibility.

For some projects, it will be possible to maintain the existing visual language almost unchanged. In others, slightly adapting the finish or colour may be a more coherent approach to working with the material, rather than attempting to completely conceal its inherent characteristics.

An approved sample should not be the only acceptance criterion

A sample makes it possible to assess colour, feel, transparency and decoration. However, approving a single unit does not define how an entire production run should perform.

The key question is: what range of variation will be acceptable once the packaging enters full-scale production? This should be agreed before industrialisation.

The decoration should also be tested on the final material, together with compatibility with the formula and the functional performance of the complete packaging system. In packaging, appearance is only one part of the validation process.

What to validate before approving packaging containing PCR

Before approving a packaging reference, a brand should define at least the following:

  • Intended percentage of PCR.
  • Type of recycled material used.
  • Traceability and documentation of recycled content.
  • Base colour of the packaging.
  • Acceptable range of colour variation.
  • Required level of transparency or opacity.
  • Decoration results on the actual material.
  • Compatibility with the formula.
  • Mechanical and functional performance.
  • Expected consistency between production runs.

Sustainability should not introduce uncertainty into a project. On the contrary, the more the raw material changes, the more important it becomes to clearly define what is expected from it.

PCR in cosmetic packaging: managing variability is also part of the design process

Working with recycled material is not simply a matter of deciding whether a pack can incorporate PCR. It means determining how much recycled content to use, which performance characteristics need to be maintained, what visual result is acceptable and how to validate that this balance works under production conditions.

When these criteria are established from the outset, variability stops being an unexpected issue and becomes part of the project specifications.

Because incorporating recycled material into cosmetic packaging in a considered way does not mean compromising perceived quality. It means understanding the material, setting clear priorities and designing around its actual characteristics.
