Sustainable packaging: a consumption trend that has wooed millennials

More than half of all consumers are willing to pay a higher price for environmentally-friendly articles. This finding comes from a study by the Dutch data analysis company Nielsen, which corroborates the preference for sustainable products, particularly among millennials. This trend affects all industries, not just the product in question, but also its “staging”, i.e. the packaging.

The millennials, or “Y Generation”, are one of the most-aware targets in matters of purchasing sustainable products; and cosmetic and perfume articles are no exception. Increasingly more buyers seek products that contain organic ingredients in packaging comprised of recycled, recyclable, or natural-origin materials.

However, “Y Generation” consumers are very demanding, since not only do they seek this type of product, but they also want a quality, lightweight and safe packaging that keeps the product in optimal conditions for a long time. This is a challenge facing R&D departments, whose relevance in the industry grows in that they need to come up with solutions that cater to the new needs. The idea is to find the balance between sustainability, cost, quality, safety and practical use.

Materials and formats

Rafesa is committed to environmentally- friendly cosmetic and perfume packaging. For this reason, we work with 100%-recyclable and reusable materials, such as PET (one of the easiest to recycle) or glass. We think that both the container and the accessories should be made of natural materials. This is why we work with materials that fulfil the REACH regulations. Moreover, our collection of wooden caps was developed according to the PEFC certification, which promotes the sustainable management of the forests where the wood is sourced.
