The beauty industry, a constantly growing market

Personal care is becoming an increasingly more prominent part of Spaniards’ lives, which in economic terms translates into an increased turnover of beauty articles. According to the latest data presented by the National Perfumery and Cosmetics Association (STANPA), in 2018, national spending on beauty products totalled 6,954 million Euros. These figures make Spain the fifth most important European market in terms of spending on perfume and cosmetic products.

Per capita spending on perfumes and cosmetics in Spain amounts to €150 a year, significantly higher than the European Union mean, which is €137/year. By product categories, special mention must be made of the importance of personal hygiene and skincare products, which together account for 52% of spending in the industry; more specifically, 24% for personal hygiene products (gels, shampoos and others) and 28% for skin care products (anti-ageing, moisturisers, etc.).

Perfume sales increase year after year

Perfume purchases continue to be one of the industry’s cornerstones. Indeed, they account for 20% of the total beauty industry. In the course of 2018, fragrance sales were 4.6% up on the previous year, totalling 1,372 million Euros in Spain.

If we take a closer look at consumption trends in perfumes, the growing interest shown by men in the fragrance market warrants particular attention. For the third year in a row, in 2018 male perfume sales increased by 5%.

Spain, the world’s second perfume exporter

Once again this year, exports of cosmetics, perfumes and essential oils have increased. In the course of 2018 these exports reached the figure of 4,680 million Euros, a 10% increase in sales abroad.

Spain is the world’s second most important exporter of perfume products for men and women, second only to France, and outperforming Germany and the United States. Perfume exports accounted for 39% of the beauty industry’s total, reaching 1,820 million Euros.

Essences and fragrances ramp up sales abroad. More specifically, essential oils recorded an interannual growth of 8.4%, generating 420 million Euros.

These results show that the beauty market in Spain, which grew for the fourth year running, is in very good health. They also mean that we are one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of cosmetics and perfumes.
